TikTok Shop UK: The Complete Seller Guide

TikTok Shop is a marketplace bolted onto a content feed. Sellers who treat it as either one on its own usually struggle. Here is how the whole thing fits together.

How products, content, creators and fulfilment connect in a TikTok Shop UK store

Short answer

TikTok Shop UK lets a registered UK business sell products directly inside the TikTok app, through short videos, LIVE streams, the Shop tab and creators who promote your products for commission. You need a verified seller account, compliant listings and fast dispatch. TikTok takes a commission on each sale, and most sales come from content rather than search.

TikTok Shop UK is a marketplace built into the TikTok app. A registered UK business lists products, and people buy them without leaving the app: from a short video, a LIVE stream, the Shop tab or a creator's showcase. TikTok handles checkout and payment, you (or TikTok's own fulfilment service) ship the order, and TikTok keeps a commission.

That description makes it sound like eBay with videos. It is not, and that difference is where most new sellers go wrong.

How TikTok Shop UK actually works

On a search marketplace, a buyer types what they want and your listing competes for that search. On TikTok Shop, most buyers were not looking for anything. They were scrolling, a video showed them a product doing something useful, and they tapped the orange basket.

So TikTok Shop has two halves that have to work together:

  1. The shop itself. Seller account, product listings, prices, stock, shipping settings, returns, customer service and account health. This is the marketplace half, and it behaves much like any other marketplace.
  2. The content engine. Videos and LIVE streams, made by you or by creators, that put the product in front of people. Without this half, a perfectly built shop sells almost nothing.

Sellers who come from eBay or Amazon tend to build an excellent shop and then wait. Sellers who come from content tend to post brilliant videos linked to a shop that keeps failing dispatch deadlines. Both lose.

Who TikTok Shop suits, and who it does not

Usually a good fitUsually a poor fit
Products that show a visible result on camera in secondsItems that look identical to a hundred others with no demo value
Price points that suit an impulse buyHigh-ticket items people research for weeks
Margins that can absorb platform commission plus creator commissionThin-margin commodity goods
Stock you hold, or a supplier who dispatches quickly from the UKSlow overseas fulfilment
Someone willing to be on camera, or budget to pay creatorsNo content capacity at all

None of these are rules. They are where I start when I assess whether TikTok Shop is worth setting up for a business, because the honest answer is sometimes no.

How to start selling on TikTok Shop UK

The process, in the order it should be done:

  1. Check your products are allowed. TikTok Shop UK has prohibited and restricted product lists, and some categories need extra approval. Check the TikTok Shop UK restricted products policy before you build anything.
  2. Get your documents consistent. Sole trader or limited company, with matching names across ID, proof of address and bank account. The full list is in TikTok Shop seller requirements in the UK.
  3. Register in Seller Centre and complete verification.
  4. Set up shipping, returns and warehouse addresses before listing anything, because orders arriving into a shop with half-finished shipping settings is how dispatch deadlines get missed in week one.
  5. List a small number of products properly. Five well-built listings beat fifty thin ones. TikTok Shop product listing optimisation covers what properly means here.
  6. Link your TikTok account so your videos can tag products.
  7. Open your products to affiliates with a commission rate you can afford.
  8. Start making content and decide whether LIVE and ads are part of the plan.

What does TikTok Shop UK cost?

At the time of writing (October 2026), the UK commission fee is 9%, inclusive of VAT, according to TikTok Shop's UK commission rate page. It is worked out on the order value including buyer-paid shipping, less refunds. Reduced rates can apply to eligible new sellers and to some Electronics and Beauty & Personal Care categories.

The commission is rarely the whole cost. On a typical order a seller may also pay:

  • Affiliate commission, if a creator made the sale
  • Shipping, whether your own carrier or TikTok's fulfilment
  • Discounts and vouchers you funded
  • Ad spend, if you run GMV Max campaigns
  • Returns and refunds

Say you sell a product for £20 with £8 landed cost. Platform commission at 9% takes £1.80. If a creator sold it at 15% commission, that is another £3. Postage and packaging at £3.50 leaves £3.70 before any ad spend, returns or your own time. That margin can work. It can also vanish with one discount campaign. The full breakdown is in TikTok Shop fees UK explained.

How to price products for TikTok Shop

Price from the bottom up, not from what competitors charge. The sequence I use:

  1. Start with landed cost: product, inbound freight, duty and packaging.
  2. Add outbound postage, or the FBT fee if you use it.
  3. Add platform commission and the affiliate rate you intend to offer.
  4. Add an allowance for returns and damaged items. Your own history is the best guide; if you have none, be conservative.
  5. Add an allowance for promotions, because TikTok Shop campaigns and vouchers are a large part of how products get pushed.
  6. What is left is your margin before ad spend and your own time.

If that number is thin, the product is not a TikTok Shop product at that price. Either the price goes up, the cost comes down through better sourcing, or you sell something else. Running a product at a loss to gain traction only works if you know exactly how you will get back to profit, and most sellers who try it do not.

One more pricing point: impulse buying works best below the point where a viewer stops to think. Where that line sits depends on the category and audience, so test it rather than assuming.

Where TikTok Shop sales come from

There are four sources of traffic, and they behave very differently:

SourceWhat you controlCostBest for
Your own videosEverythingYour timeBuilding a brand account over months
Affiliate creatorsCommission rate, samples, briefsCommission per saleReaching audiences you do not have
LIVE sellingSchedule, offers, presenterTime and stockConverting warm viewers, bundles, launches
GMV Max adsBudget and ROI targetAd spendScaling products already proven to sell

Creators and the affiliate programme

For most new shops, affiliates are the fastest route to first sales, because creators bring an audience you do not have and you only pay when they sell. TikTok runs two main models: open collaboration, where any eligible creator can pick up your product, and targeted collaboration, where you invite specific creators at a rate you set for them. The TikTok Shop affiliate programme guide covers commission rates, samples and how to brief creators so the videos actually sell.

LIVE selling

LIVE is closer to a shopping channel than a video. A presenter demonstrates, answers questions and pins products while people buy. It rewards consistency more than production value. TikTok Shop LIVE selling covers how to plan a first stream and what to measure.

Ads and GMV Max

TikTok has moved Shop advertising onto GMV Max, an automated campaign type that optimises for sales. It is useful once a product has proved it sells organically, and an expensive way to find out that it does not. TikTok Shop ads and GMV Max explained covers when to switch it on.

Listings still matter

Because most traffic is from content, sellers neglect listings. That is a mistake for two reasons. First, a buyer who taps through from a video lands on the product page and decides there. Unclear sizing, poor images or a vague title lose the sale the creator earned. Second, TikTok Shop also has search, and listings with clear titles and complete attributes get found there.

Listings also have to pass review. Exaggerated claims, especially health or before-and-after claims, get listings removed, and repeated violations damage the shop. The service I run puts compliance checks before the catalogue for this reason.

Fulfilment and account health

This is the part nobody puts in a video, and it is the one that closes shops.

TikTok Shop measures sellers on how quickly orders are dispatched, how many are cancelled by the seller, how many arrive late and how many are returned or disputed. Fall below the thresholds and you face restrictions, reduced visibility or suspension. Specific targets and windows are set in Seller Centre and change, so check the current figures in your shop's account health page rather than relying on a blog post, including this one.

You have two broad choices:

  • Ship yourself from your own stock or a UK 3PL. You control packaging and inserts, and you carry the dispatch metrics.
  • Use Fulfilled by TikTok (FBT), where you send stock to TikTok's warehouse and they pick, pack and ship. The FBT UK guide explains the current terms.

If you are running TikTok Shop alongside a website or other marketplaces, connect order and stock data properly. Automating eCommerce order processing covers the general approach.

Can you dropship on TikTok Shop?

Technically you can sell items you do not physically hold. Practically, the dispatch and delivery standards apply to every order regardless of who packs it. A supplier who ships from overseas over two weeks will fail those standards, and a viral video can generate hundreds of orders in a day, which is exactly when a slow supplier falls apart.

If you want to sell on TikTok Shop without holding stock, the only version I would consider is a UK-based supplier who dispatches within a day or two, provides tracking, and has been tested with real orders. Even then, a shop that grows usually ends up holding stock or using FBT. Read the TikTok Shop UK seller terms before deciding.

The broader question of whether dropshipping is worth doing at all is covered in the dropshipping half of this cluster, starting with how to start dropshipping in the UK.

TikTok Shop vs eBay, Amazon and Etsy

If you already sell elsewhere, the useful question is not which platform is best but what job each one does in your mix.

The spiky pattern is the thing to plan for. On a search marketplace, sales move gradually and you can reorder in step. On TikTok Shop, one creator's video can sell more in an afternoon than the previous month, and then nothing the week after. That shapes how much stock you hold, which supplier you use and whether FBT makes sense.

If you are deciding between the search marketplaces, eBay vs Amazon for sellers covers that comparison in detail.

What kind of content sells on TikTok Shop

You do not need studio production. You need the product to do something on screen within the first two or three seconds. The formats that tend to carry products well:

  • Demonstration. The product solving the problem, start to finish, with no preamble.
  • Before and after, where it is honest and allowed. Beauty and health claims are heavily policed, so keep anything comparative factual and avoid medical promises.
  • Unboxing and first impressions, especially from creators whose audience trusts their opinion.
  • Comparison. Your product next to the thing people currently use.
  • Problem first. Open on the annoyance, then show the fix.

What rarely sells: polished brand videos that look like adverts, slideshows of product photos, and videos where the product appears after twenty seconds of talking.

The practical routine I suggest to sellers starting out is a small number of formats repeated with variations, rather than a new idea every day. When a video produces orders, make five more versions of it with different hooks. The data on which hooks work for your product is more valuable than any general advice.

Customer service, returns and reviews

Customer messages on TikTok Shop come through Seller Centre, and response time is tracked. Set up saved replies for the questions you will get repeatedly: delivery time, sizing, how to return. If you already use a helpdesk for other channels, check whether it connects to TikTok Shop so messages are not split across three inboxes.

Returns follow TikTok's policy and UK consumer law. Buying online gives consumers a statutory right to cancel, explained on the GOV.UK guide to online and distance selling, and a marketplace's own policy sits on top of that rather than replacing it.

Product reviews appear on the listing and affect conversion. You cannot buy them or offer incentives for positive ones. The reliable way to get good reviews is a product that matches the video, packed well, arriving when promised.

Why TikTok Shops fail

From the shops I have looked at and the patterns sellers describe, failure is usually one of these:

  1. No content plan. A shop is built, nobody makes videos, no creators are recruited, and the listings sit unseen.
  2. Margins that cannot carry creator commission. The product only works at a price that leaves nothing to pay affiliates, so no creator promotes it.
  3. A spike the operation cannot handle. A video takes off, stock runs out or the supplier cannot keep up, cancellations and late dispatches pile up, and the shop gets restricted at the exact moment it found demand.
  4. Policy violations. Exaggerated claims, restricted products listed without approval, or misleading images lead to removed listings and account penalties.
  5. Chasing views instead of orders. A video with a million views and no sales is entertainment, not commerce. Track orders per video and per creator.

Every one of those is fixable before launch, which is why the first month should be mostly setup and planning rather than posting.

Doing it yourself or getting help

A small seller with time, a camera-friendly product and some patience can set up TikTok Shop alone. Seller Centre is usable, and TikTok's own Academy material is decent.

Help is worth paying for when the cost of mistakes is high: a large catalogue, a restricted category, an existing brand whose reputation matters, or a business that needs TikTok Shop running alongside Shopify and other marketplaces without stock problems. It is not worth paying anyone who promises a specific sales figure.

A realistic first 90 days

Month 1: foundations. Verification, compliance check of products, shipping and returns settings, five to ten listings built properly, affiliate plan live with samples ready.

Month 2: content. Your own videos several times a week, a first batch of creators sent samples with a short brief, one or two test LIVE streams. Track which videos and creators produce orders, not views.

Month 3: focus. Double down on the products and creators that sold. Raise commission for creators who perform. Consider GMV Max on proven products only. Fix anything in account health before scaling.

I will not tell you how much you will sell. Nobody honest can, because it depends on the product, the content and a recommendation algorithm nobody outside TikTok controls.

Yes. At the time of writing (October 2026) TikTok Shop UK accepts both sole traders and limited companies, provided they can pass verification with ID, proof of address and a UK bank account. There is no follower minimum to open a seller account, but your products must be in permitted categories and your listings must meet TikTok's policies.

Not to open the shop. Followers help your own videos and LIVE streams reach people, but many shops get their early sales through creators in the affiliate programme, who bring their own audience. A brand-new account with no following can still sell if the product is shown well by people who already have viewers.

Yes, and most sellers do. The practical problem is stock: the same item selling on three channels needs inventory kept in sync, or you oversell and take a cancellation that counts against your shop. A sync app or integration solves that, and it should be set up before launch rather than after the first oversell.

It depends on how clean your documents are. Mismatched names between ID, bank account and business details are the most common reason for delays or rejections. Get those consistent before you apply, and expect product listings to go through their own review after the shop itself is approved.

Different, not better. Amazon and eBay are search marketplaces: people arrive knowing what they want. TikTok Shop is discovery: people buy something they did not know existed ten seconds earlier. Products that demonstrate well on video suit TikTok; replacement parts and commodity items usually suit search marketplaces.

Yes. Settlements go to the UK bank account verified on the shop, after TikTok deducts its commission, any affiliate commission you agreed, and other applicable fees. Payouts follow a settlement schedule rather than landing the moment an order is placed, so plan cash flow around that delay, especially if you pay suppliers upfront.
