TikTok Shop Ads and GMV Max Explained
GMV Max is now how TikTok Shop advertising works. It is good at scaling products that already sell, and an expensive way to discover that a product does not.

Short answer
GMV Max is TikTok's automated campaign type for TikTok Shop ads. Since July 2025 TikTok has made it the default and only supported campaign type for Shop Ads. You choose products and a budget or return target, and TikTok's system picks audiences, placements and creatives, including your organic and creator videos. It works best on products already proven to sell.
TikTok Shop ads now run on GMV Max, an automated campaign type that optimises for gross merchandise value, meaning sales. According to TikTok's notice on GMV Max migration for TikTok Shop Ads, from July 2025 GMV Max became the default and only supported campaign type for TikTok Shop Ads. Product Shopping Ads, and Video and LIVE Shopping Ads pointing to TikTok Shop, were retired as Shop Ads options.
At the time of writing (October 2026), that means if you want to pay to promote your TikTok Shop products, GMV Max is the route.
How GMV Max works
You give the system less to configure and more to work with:
- You choose the products, or the LIVE stream, to promote.
- You set a budget and an optimisation goal, typically a target return on ad spend.
- TikTok's system chooses audiences, placements and creatives automatically.
- It uses content connected to your products, which can include your own videos and creator videos, alongside the product listing itself.
- It optimises across paid and organic traffic towards sales.
There are two main flavours: Product GMV Max for promoting products in the catalogue, and LIVE GMV Max for driving viewers into LIVE streams. Availability differs by market and changes, so check which options your UK Ads Manager account shows.
Attribution: read your results carefully
This is the most important thing to understand about GMV Max. TikTok's own help documentation on attribution for GMV Max says that while a GMV Max campaign is running, relevant conversions are attributed to it.
In plain terms: some of the sales GMV Max reports would have happened anyway, from organic videos and affiliates. The campaign's reported return will look better than its true additional contribution.
How to get a more honest picture:
- Note your baseline of daily orders and revenue for a product before switching GMV Max on
- Compare total shop sales, not just campaign-reported sales, before and during the campaign
- Pause and observe occasionally, to see how much of the volume stays without ads
None of this is unique to TikTok. Every platform's ad reporting tends to flatter its own ads. It just matters more when the platform also controls the organic side.
When to use GMV Max, and when not to
| Use it when | Hold off when |
|---|---|
| A product sells steadily without ads | A product has not sold organically yet |
| You have several videos that convert | You have no content connected to the product |
| Stock can handle a jump in orders | Stock is thin or the supplier is slow |
| Your margin leaves room after commission and affiliates | Margin is already tight |
| Account health is good | You have dispatch or cancellation problems |
Ads amplify. They amplify a product that sells and they amplify a broken operation just as effectively. A spike in orders on a product you cannot dispatch on time is the fastest route to account restrictions.
Working out your break-even return on ad spend
Before setting a target, know the number below which you lose money:
- Take your margin per order before ads, after TikTok's commission, shipping, affiliate commission where relevant, and returns. TikTok Shop fees UK explained covers how to calculate it.
- Express it as a share of the sale price.
- Break-even return on ad spend = 1 divided by that share.
Hypothetical: a £30 product with £9 margin before ads has a 30% margin share. Break-even return is 1 divided by 0.3, about 3.3. Every £1 of ad spend needs to produce at least £3.30 of sales just to stand still. Set the target above that, and remember the attribution point above: reported returns are generous.
The same discipline applies to any spend that is meant to pay for itself. Working out automation cost and ROI uses a similar approach for a different kind of investment.
ROI protection
TikTok offers ROI protection for GMV Max campaigns, which can issue ad credits when a campaign's return falls below a threshold despite following TikTok's guidelines. Conditions apply, and they change. Read the current terms rather than treating it as a guarantee, and do not set budgets on the assumption that credits will cover losses.
Content is still the input
Automation does not remove the need for content; it increases it. GMV Max can only choose between the creatives it has. Shops with a steady flow of new videos, their own and their creators', give the system more to test. Shops with three old videos do not.
So the order of work stays the same: listings, then content and creators, then LIVE if it suits, and ads last.
A sensible first GMV Max test
- Pick one product with steady organic sales and good stock.
- Record its average daily orders and total shop sales for the previous two weeks.
- Set a modest daily budget you are comfortable losing, and a return target above your break-even.
- Leave it alone long enough for the system to learn. Changing settings daily resets that learning.
- After two to three weeks, compare total sales and total margin against the baseline, not just the campaign dashboard.
- Scale, adjust or stop based on that comparison.
If the total margin across the shop did not rise by more than the ad spend, the campaign was not worth it, whatever the campaign report says. The TikTok Shop affiliate programme guide and TikTok Shop LIVE selling cover the content side.
