TikTok Shop LIVE Selling: How It Works
LIVE selling is a shopping channel you run from your phone. It rewards preparation and consistency far more than production value.

Short answer
TikTok Shop LIVE selling means streaming in real time from a TikTok account linked to your shop, demonstrating products and pinning them so viewers can buy without leaving the stream. Sellers add products to the LIVE beforehand, run time-limited offers during it, and fulfil the orders afterwards like any other shop order. Preparation and regular scheduling matter more than equipment.
TikTok Shop LIVE selling is real-time streaming from a TikTok account linked to your shop, where a presenter demonstrates products and pins them to the stream so viewers can buy without leaving. Think of it as a shopping channel run from a phone: the format rewards someone who knows the products, answers questions honestly and turns up on a regular schedule.
TikTok's own introduction, Learn about LIVE in the UK Seller Academy, covers the controls. This article covers how to plan and run it as a seller.
How TikTok Shop LIVE selling works
The basic flow:
- Products are added to the LIVE before you start, from your shop's catalogue.
- You go LIVE from the linked TikTok account.
- You pin the product you are talking about, so it appears as a card viewers can tap.
- Viewers buy inside the stream, using TikTok's normal checkout.
- Orders land in Seller Centre and are fulfilled like any other shop order.
Around that core, sellers can usually schedule LIVE events in advance so followers get a reminder, run time-limited offers during the stream, and use on-screen text to highlight the current deal. Features vary over time and by account, so check what your Seller Centre offers.
LIVE vs short videos
| Short videos | LIVE | |
|---|---|---|
| Reach | Can spread far beyond your followers | Mostly people who are on TikTok at that moment |
| Lifespan | Can sell for weeks | Sells while it is running |
| Interaction | Comments after the fact | Questions answered instantly |
| Effort | Plan, film, edit | Prepare, then perform without a safety net |
| Strength | Discovery | Conversion of interested viewers |
They work together. Short videos find people. LIVE converts those who want to know more. Some sellers advertise their next LIVE in their videos for exactly this reason.
Is LIVE right for your products?
LIVE suits products where questions are the barrier to buying: how does it fit, how big is it, what does the texture look like, does it work on this. A presenter answering those in real time removes the barrier.
It also suits ranges: clothing, beauty, collectables, accessories. A presenter can move through many items and bundle them.
It suits single, simple products less well. If there is nothing to ask about, a good video does the job, and an hour of LIVE about one item is hard work for everyone.
How to plan your first TikTok Shop LIVE
- Pick the products. Three to ten, with stock levels checked. Choose the ones your videos show people are most interested in.
- Decide the offer. A time-limited discount, a bundle or a gift with purchase. Make sure the margin can carry it, using the same maths as in TikTok Shop fees UK explained.
- Write a running order, not a script. A list of products and talking points in sequence.
- Prepare the set. Products within reach, a clean background, light from the front, phone mounted at eye level.
- Test the connection and sound, ideally with a short private test.
- Schedule it and mention it in your videos beforehand.
- Have a second person if you can, to watch comments, pin products and manage stock while the presenter talks.
A sample running order
A hypothetical 60-minute LIVE for a small skincare range:
| Time | What happens |
|---|---|
| 0 to 5 minutes | Welcome, say what is on today and what the offer is. Viewers are still arriving. |
| 5 to 20 minutes | Hero product: demonstrate, answer questions, pin it. |
| 20 to 35 minutes | Two supporting products, shown with the hero as a routine. |
| 35 to 40 minutes | Recap the offer for new arrivals. Re-pin the hero. |
| 40 to 55 minutes | Answer the questions that have piled up, show the bundle. |
| 55 to 60 minutes | Final call on the offer, say when the next LIVE is. |
The repeating structure is deliberate. People join at different points, and someone arriving at minute 30 has missed everything unless you come back to it.
What to say, and what not to
Everything said on a LIVE is advertising, and claims made out loud are judged the same way as claims written in a listing. The rules on exaggerated, medical or before-and-after claims apply in full, and LIVE is where presenters get carried away.
Brief anyone presenting, including yourself:
- Describe what the product does, accurately
- Do not promise results, especially health or body results
- Do not invent scarcity ("only three left") unless it is true
- Answer honestly when the product is wrong for someone
That last one sells more than it costs. Viewers notice a presenter who says "this is not the one for you, try this one instead".
What to measure after each LIVE
Seller Centre gives you LIVE analytics. The numbers that matter:
- Orders and revenue from the session
- Peak and average concurrent viewers, to see when people actually watch
- Product clicks vs orders, per product, to spot a product people look at and do not buy
- Average viewing time, which tells you whether the content held attention
- Returns on LIVE orders, checked a few weeks later
Compare sessions over time rather than judging any single one. A first LIVE with a handful of viewers is normal. Regular scheduling builds an audience that knows when to turn up.
Common first-LIVE mistakes
- Going live with no offer. Viewers need a reason to buy now rather than later.
- Talking to the camera without reading comments. The interaction is the point of LIVE; a presenter who ignores questions is just a slow video.
- Too many products. Fifteen items in an hour means none gets explained properly.
- Irregular timing. Streaming once at random and then not for a month means every session starts from zero.
- No stock check. Selling out ten minutes in, then spending forty minutes apologising, wastes the audience you built.
- Poor sound. Viewers forgive average video. They leave quickly when they cannot hear.
After the LIVE: fulfilment and questions
A good LIVE can generate a burst of orders in an hour. They all need dispatching within your shop's dispatch window, so check stock and packing capacity before you go live, not after.
Questions also keep arriving after a stream: where is my order, does it come in another size. If message volume becomes a problem, using AI to handle customer enquiries covers what can sensibly be automated and what should not.
Creators running LIVE for you
You do not have to present every LIVE yourself. Creators in the affiliate programme can sell your products in their own streams and earn commission. Some creators specialise in LIVE and can move significant stock in a session. Agree dates in advance and make sure stock is in place. The TikTok Shop affiliate programme guide covers setting that up.
Once LIVE is converting reliably, paid traffic into streams becomes an option. TikTok Shop ads and GMV Max explained covers how ads work for TikTok Shop, including which campaign types are available.
For how LIVE fits alongside listings, creators and fulfilment, see the TikTok Shop UK guide. Planning support for LIVE shopping events is included in the growth tier of the TikTok Shop service.
