TikTok Shop Product Listing Optimisation

A creator's video gets the tap. The listing gets the sale, or loses it. Here is how to build TikTok Shop listings that do their half of the job.

Anatomy of an optimised TikTok Shop product listing with title, images, attributes and description

Short answer

An optimised TikTok Shop listing has a clear title that says what the product is, square images led by a clean main shot, a short product video, every relevant attribute filled in, sensible variants and a description that answers buying questions without exaggerated claims. It has to pass TikTok's review, help the product appear in Shop search and convert people arriving from videos.

TikTok Shop product listing optimisation is about one page doing three jobs: passing TikTok's review, getting found in TikTok Shop search, and converting people who tapped through from a video. Most listings manage the first, half-manage the second and neglect the third, because sellers assume content does the selling.

Content gets the tap. The listing decides whether the tap becomes an order.

Where TikTok Shop listings are seen

A listing shows up in more places than sellers expect:

  • The product page someone lands on from a video or LIVE
  • TikTok Shop search results
  • The Shop tab and recommendation feeds
  • Creator showcases
  • The affiliate marketplace, where creators decide whether to promote you

That last one is easy to forget. Creators judge your product partly on its listing. A thin, poorly photographed listing gets fewer creators, which gets fewer videos.

How to write a TikTok Shop product title

A good title says what the product is in the words a buyer would use, then the attribute that matters most.

A workable pattern: product type, key feature or material, size or quantity, who it is for.

Rules of thumb:

  • Front-load the product type; titles get cut off on small screens
  • No capitals for emphasis, no emoji, no hype words
  • No claims you cannot support, especially "best", "number one" or anything medical
  • No competitor brand names
  • One product per listing; do not stuff a title with every possible variant

If you have written eBay titles, the discipline is similar, though TikTok titles should read more naturally. How to write eBay product titles covers the keyword thinking in more depth.

Images and video

Most TikTok Shop buyers are on a phone, so design for that.

  1. Main image: the product on a clean, plain background, filling most of the frame, square format. No text overlays, watermarks or borders.
  2. Second image: the product in use, so the scale and context are obvious.
  3. Detail shots: texture, stitching, ports, the lid mechanism, whatever buyers ask about.
  4. Size or dimension image, with real measurements.
  5. What is in the box, if there is more than one item.
  6. A short product video, showing it working.

The same products often feature in LIVE streams, where viewers see the listing card while the presenter talks. Images that match what is shown on camera build trust; TikTok Shop LIVE selling covers how listings are used during a stream.

Avoid images that misrepresent the product: filters that change the colour, edited before-and-after shots, or lifestyle images of a different variant. They cause returns and can get the listing removed.

Category and attributes

Choose the most specific accurate category. It affects which attributes you are asked for, which rules apply, where the product appears in browsing and sometimes which commission rate applies.

Then fill in every attribute that applies, even the optional ones. Attributes are how TikTok understands what the product is: material, size, colour, compatibility, age range. They feed search filters, and an empty attribute is a filter you will not appear in.

Variants

Group genuine variants of the same product, such as sizes and colours, under one listing, with a photo for each colour. Do not use variants to group different products under one listing to share reviews, and do not create a cheap dummy variant to show a lower starting price. Both mislead buyers and both are the kind of thing marketplaces penalise.

Keep stock accurate per variant. An out-of-stock size that still shows as available becomes a cancellation, and seller-caused cancellations count against your shop.

Writing the description

Buyers on TikTok Shop scan. Structure the description so the answers are easy to find:

  • One or two sentences on what it is and the problem it solves
  • A short bullet list of the key features, in plain words
  • Specifications: dimensions, materials, weight, compatibility
  • What is included
  • Care or usage instructions, where relevant
  • Delivery and returns basics, if not shown elsewhere

Write it for the person who has just watched a 20-second video and has one question left. What is that question? Answer it. How to improve eCommerce product descriptions covers the general craft, and almost all of it applies here.

Claims and compliance

This is where listings fail review. TikTok Shop polices claims closely, especially in beauty, health, supplements and anything for children.

AvoidPrefer
Cures, treats, healsDescribes what the product is and how it is used
Guaranteed results, instant resultsFactual features
Before-and-after editsUnedited photos of real use
Medical or clinical claims without evidenceNothing you cannot document
Fake scarcity or fake discountsReal prices and real stock

If a product's main selling point is a claim you cannot make, the product is a poor fit for TikTok Shop. The TikTok Shop UK restricted products policy is the starting point for what needs extra approval.

Price and shipping on the listing

Price is part of the listing, and buyers compare. Show the real price, offer free or clearly stated shipping and set an honest delivery estimate. Set the price from your full cost per order, as worked through in TikTok Shop fees UK explained, not from the cheapest competitor. If you use Fulfilled by TikTok, listings can show faster delivery, which helps conversion.

Do not inflate a was-price to make a discount look bigger. It misleads buyers and invites enforcement under consumer law as well as platform rules.

A listing checklist

  • Title says what it is, in buyer words, without hype
  • Main image clean, square, product filling the frame
  • At least five images covering use, detail, size and contents
  • Product video showing it working
  • Most specific category chosen
  • Every relevant attribute filled in
  • Variants genuine, each with a photo and accurate stock
  • Description answers the obvious buying questions
  • No claims you cannot document
  • Price, shipping and delivery estimate honest

Test and improve

Listings are not finished on launch day. In Seller Centre, look at product page views against orders for each product. A listing that gets plenty of visits from videos but few orders has a listing problem: price, images, unclear sizing or missing information. Change one thing at a time and watch the conversion rate.

Read the questions buyers ask in messages and comments. Every repeated question is something the listing should have answered.

Look at returns too. Return reasons such as "not as described" or "smaller than expected" usually point back to the listing: a misleading image, a missing measurement or a colour that photographs differently from real life. Fixing the listing is cheaper than absorbing the returns.

Finally, check how your listings look to creators in the affiliate marketplace. If a listing would not persuade you to put your own name behind it, it will not persuade them. The TikTok Shop affiliate programme guide covers what creators look for.

Common reasons are a product in a restricted category without approval, exaggerated or medical claims in the title or description, images with watermarks, contact details or misleading edits, and a product placed in the wrong category. The rejection notice usually names the policy. Fix that specific issue rather than resubmitting unchanged.

Long enough to say what the product is, its key attribute and who it is for, and short enough to read on a phone. Front-load the important words, because titles are truncated in feeds and search. Check the current character limit in Seller Centre when you create the listing, since platform limits change.

As a starting point, yes, but they need editing. Marketplace titles stuffed with keywords read badly on TikTok, and some marketplace claims will not pass TikTok review. Images usually need reworking for a mobile-first, square layout. Treat imported listings as drafts, not finished pages.
