eBay Dropshipping Rules: What Is and Isn't Allowed

eBay allows dropshipping. It does not allow the version most YouTube tutorials teach. Here is where the line sits and how to stay on the right side of it.

What eBay allows and does not allow when dropshipping from suppliers

Short answer

eBay allows dropshipping when you fulfil orders from a wholesale supplier. It does not allow listing an item and then buying it from another retailer or marketplace to ship directly to your buyer. As the seller, you stay responsible for delivery within the time stated in your listing and for the buyer's satisfaction. Breaking the policy can lead to removed listings, restrictions or suspension.

eBay allows dropshipping, as long as you fulfil orders from a wholesale supplier. What it does not allow is listing an item, waiting for it to sell, and then buying it from another retailer or marketplace to ship straight to your buyer. That second version, often called retail arbitrage, is what a lot of online tutorials teach, and it is what gets eBay accounts restricted.

This article explains where eBay draws the line at the time of writing (October 2026), what you remain responsible for, and how to run a dropshipping operation on eBay that does not put the account at risk. For the business model in general, start with how to start dropshipping in the UK.

What eBay's drop shipping policy says

The official source is eBay's drop shipping policy. In summary:

  • Allowed: fulfilling orders directly from a wholesale supplier.
  • Not allowed: listing an item and then buying it from another retailer or marketplace that ships it directly to your customer.
  • Your responsibility: making sure the item arrives safely within the delivery time stated in your listing, and the buyer's overall satisfaction.
  • Consequences: eBay may remove listings, issue warnings, restrict selling activity or suspend the account.

Policies change. Read the current page before you build anything on it.

Allowed vs not allowed, in practice

SituationLikely status under the policy
A UK wholesaler ships your eBay orders under a dropship agreementAllowed
A brand or manufacturer fulfils your orders as an authorised resellerAllowed
You buy from a high-street retailer's website after each sale and ship to your buyerNot allowed
You buy from Amazon, another eBay seller or a similar marketplace after each saleNot allowed
You buy from a consumer marketplace that sells to the public, even at low pricesHigh risk; it is a retailer or marketplace
You hold your own stock bought from any source and ship it yourselfNot dropshipping; normal selling rules apply

The test is whether your source is a wholesale supplier whose business is supplying sellers, or a retailer or marketplace selling to the public.

Why eBay draws the line there

Retail arbitrage creates predictable problems for buyers. The parcel arrives in another retailer's packaging, sometimes with that retailer's invoice showing a lower price. Delivery times depend on another business's stock and courier. Returns go to the wrong place. The buyer feels misled, and eBay treats that as a buyer experience problem, which is how these accounts tend to come to its attention.

A wholesale dropship arrangement, by contrast, is designed for this: neutral packaging, stock held for resellers, and an agreed process for returns.

What you are responsible for

Even with a perfect supplier, eBay treats you as the seller.

Delivery within the stated time

Your handling time and delivery estimate must reflect what your supplier actually achieves. If your supplier dispatches in two working days, a one-day handling time is a promise you will break. Late deliveries count against your seller performance.

Tracking

Upload valid tracking for every order promptly. Automating that step, covered in dropshipping automation tools and workflows, removes the most common reason tracking is late.

Item location

State accurately where the item ships from. A listing showing a UK location for an item that ships from overseas misleads buyers about delivery and import charges.

Returns and faulty items

The buyer's rights are against you, under eBay's policies and UK consumer law. Agree with your supplier where returns go and who pays for faulty goods.

Buyer satisfaction

Wrong items, damaged parcels, missing parts and slow replies all affect your feedback and your seller standards, regardless of whose warehouse caused them. eBay seller performance standards explained covers how eBay measures this.

How to dropship on eBay without putting the account at risk

  1. Use wholesale suppliers only. UK wholesalers or brands with a proper dropship arrangement. Finding reliable dropshipping suppliers for the UK covers how to find and vet them.
  2. Get the arrangement in writing, including neutral packaging with no invoices or other retailers' branding.
  3. Set handling times from real data, based on your own test orders.
  4. Sync stock automatically. Selling an item your supplier no longer has means a cancellation, which hurts your standards.
  5. Protect your margin. eBay fees, promoted listings and returns all come out of it. Check the numbers before listing.
  6. Register as a business seller if you are trading, which also affects buyers' rights and your obligations.
  7. Start small. A new account with a sudden surge of listings and late deliveries attracts attention.

Listings still need to be good

Policy compliance gets you to the starting line; it does not sell anything. Dropshipped items often come with supplier titles and photos shared by many other sellers. Write your own titles, fill in item specifics and use better images where you can. The eBay listing optimisation guide covers how eBay search ranks listings.

eBay vs other channels for dropshipping

Fees, VAT and margins on eBay dropshipping

eBay's own selling fees, any promoted listings spend and returns all come out of the margin, and dropshipped items from wholesale suppliers usually have less margin to start with than retail arbitrage appeared to offer. Before listing a product, work out the margin per order after eBay's fees at the current rates on eBay's fees page, supplier cost, shipping and a returns allowance.

VAT applies on eBay as anywhere else. Your turnover on eBay counts towards the VAT registration threshold alongside every other channel, and goods shipped from overseas follow the import rules covered in dropshipping VAT and legal rules in the UK.

Common eBay dropshipping mistakes

  • Treating a consumer marketplace as a wholesale supplier because it is cheap
  • Handling times copied from the supplier's best case
  • Item location set to the UK for goods shipping from abroad
  • Supplier paperwork showing prices or another business's branding in the parcel
  • No stock sync, leading to cancellations
  • Listing hundreds of items on a new account before the supplier is proven
  • Ignoring buyer messages because the supplier "handles delivery"

If eBay has already taken action

If listings have been removed or the account restricted, read the notice carefully: it usually names the policy. Stop the practice that caused it, end any retail sourcing, fix handling times and tracking, and respond through eBay's official channels. Do not open a second account to get around a restriction; that usually makes matters worse.

Yes, at the time of writing (October 2026), provided you fulfil orders from a wholesale supplier. What eBay does not allow is buying the item from another retailer or marketplace after a sale and having that retailer ship it to your buyer. You remain responsible for delivery and for the buyer's satisfaction either way.

No. Buying an item from Amazon, or any other retailer or marketplace, and having it shipped to your eBay buyer is exactly what eBay's drop shipping policy prohibits. It also tends to be discovered quickly, because the buyer receives a parcel from another retailer, sometimes with a different price on the paperwork.

AliExpress is a marketplace selling to the public, so using it as your source carries a clear risk under eBay's rule against fulfilling from another retailer or marketplace. Some suppliers on such platforms also operate wholesale or dropship programmes. If you use any overseas source, confirm it is a genuine wholesale arrangement and that delivery times match your listing.
