TikTok Shop Seller Requirements in the UK
Most TikTok Shop applications that stall do so over one thing: details that do not match. Here is what TikTok asks for and how to get it right first time.

Short answer
To sell on TikTok Shop UK you register as either an individual or sole trader or a corporate seller such as a limited company. You need government ID, proof of address, a UK bank account in a matching name and, for companies, Companies House registration details and a VAT number if registered. Products must also pass TikTok's category and restricted-product rules.
The TikTok Shop seller requirements in the UK come down to three things: a business identity TikTok can verify, a UK bank account in a matching name, and products that are allowed on the platform. Everything else in the application is detail around those three.
The process is not difficult. It does punish carelessness, and almost every delayed application I see has the same root cause: details that do not quite match from one document to the next.
Which seller type should you choose?
At the time of writing (October 2026), TikTok Shop UK has two registration routes, set out in the UK TikTok Shop seller registration policy:
| Individual or sole trader | Corporate seller | |
|---|---|---|
| Suits | Someone trading in their own name | Limited companies and other registered entities |
| Identity check | Your own ID and residential address | The company's details plus the ID of the owner or primary authorised user |
| Bank account | UK account in your name | UK account in the company's name |
| Business registration | Not a Companies House entity | Registration details from Companies House or the relevant register |
| VAT number | If you have one | Requested where the company is VAT registered |
Pick the route that matches reality. If you trade as a limited company, register as corporate even if a sole trader application looks quicker. Payouts, tax and the legal seller on every order should all line up with the entity that actually runs the business.
Changing seller type after the fact is not a simple settings switch, so this choice is worth thirty seconds of thought now.
Sole trader or limited company for TikTok Shop?
If you are starting from scratch, the platform does not force the decision. The business considerations do:
| Sole trader | Limited company | |
|---|---|---|
| Setup | Register with HMRC for Self Assessment | Incorporate at Companies House, then register for Corporation Tax |
| Liability | Personal | Generally limited to the company |
| Admin | Lighter | Annual accounts, confirmation statement, payroll if you pay yourself a salary |
| Tax | Income Tax and National Insurance on profit | Corporation Tax, then tax on what you take out |
| Credibility with suppliers and creators | Fine for most | Sometimes easier with larger suppliers |
Many sellers start as sole traders and incorporate later once the business proves itself. That is a sensible path, but plan the switch: a new company means a new TikTok Shop verification, new bank details and potentially a new shop. Talk to an accountant before you register if you expect the business to grow quickly, because moving a busy shop is more disruptive than starting with the right structure.
What documents does TikTok Shop UK ask for?
TikTok publishes the list in its guide to the key documents needed to open a TikTok Shop in the UK. In practice you should have these ready before you start.
For individual or sole trader sellers
- Government-issued photo ID, such as a passport or driving licence
- Your full legal name and date of birth exactly as they appear on that ID
- Proof of residential address, such as a recent utility bill or bank statement
- A phone number you can receive codes on
- A UK bank account in the same name as your ID
For corporate sellers
- Company name and registration number exactly as shown at Companies House
- Company registration date
- Proof of business address
- VAT number, if the company is VAT registered
- ID for the business owner or primary authorised user
- A letter of authorisation, where the person applying is not the person named on the documents
- A UK bank account in the company's name
How to register, step by step
- Gather and check every document first. Lay them side by side and compare names, spellings and addresses character for character.
- Go to Seller Centre through the UK registration page and sign up with a business email and phone number you will keep long term.
- Choose your seller type and enter business details exactly as they appear on your documents.
- Upload documents as clear, uncropped colour images. All four corners visible, no glare.
- Add your bank account. The account holder name must match the seller.
- Add warehouse and return addresses. These are where orders ship from and where returns go.
- Wait for verification, and answer any request for more information promptly.
- Link your TikTok account once approved, so videos and LIVE streams can tag your products.
Product listings then go through their own review. An approved shop does not mean every product will be approved.
Linking a TikTok account to your shop
Your shop and your TikTok account are separate things that get connected. The shop is the commerce side: products, orders, money. The TikTok account is where your videos and LIVE streams live.
A few practical points:
- Use an account you control as a business. Not a staff member's personal account that leaves with them.
- Keep the account clean. Community guideline violations on the linked account can affect what the shop is allowed to do.
- Decide who has access. Seller Centre lets you add users with different permissions. Give people the access they need and no more, and remove it when they leave.
- Plan for more than one account if needed. Larger brands sometimes run several accounts for different product lines or presenters. Check the current linking rules in Seller Centre before building content plans around this.
You do not need followers to open the shop, but you do need some way of getting content in front of people. If your own account is new, the affiliate programme is usually where early sales come from.
Why TikTok Shop applications get rejected
The reasons I see most often:
- Name mismatches. "Jon" on the bank account, "Jonathan" on the passport. A trading name used where the legal name was required. A company name missing "Ltd".
- Address mismatches. Proof of address showing a different flat number, or an old address.
- Poor document images. Cropped corners, glare, low resolution or screenshots of scans.
- Wrong seller type. A limited company registered as an individual, or the reverse.
- Expired ID.
- Prohibited products. Planning to sell items TikTok does not allow, which no amount of paperwork fixes.
Fix the cause rather than resubmitting. If your bank account is in a slightly different name, change the bank details or the application, not the photo quality.
Product and category requirements
Being a verified seller is only half of it. TikTok Shop UK restricts what can be sold, and some categories need extra approval or documentation before you can list. The TikTok Shop UK restricted products policy is the reference.
Categories that tend to need the most care include anything ingestible, cosmetics and skincare, electrical goods, children's products and anything making health claims. For these, expect to show that products meet UK safety and labelling rules, and expect listing copy to be checked for claims.
Two practical points:
- Check before you buy stock. It is far cheaper to find out a product is restricted before you have a pallet of it.
- Claims matter as much as products. A permitted product can still have its listing removed for an exaggerated claim. TikTok Shop product listing optimisation covers how to write listings that pass review and still sell.
Operational requirements once you are live
Approval is not the finish line. Once you are trading, TikTok Shop expects:
- Dispatch within the window set in Seller Centre, with valid tracking
- Low seller-caused cancellations, which mostly means not overselling stock
- Responses to customer messages within the expected time
- Returns handled under TikTok's policy and UK consumer law
- Listings that stay accurate, including price and stock
These are measured, and falling short leads to warnings, restrictions or suspension. The thresholds change, so read them in your shop's account health page. The TikTok Shop UK guide explains how fulfilment choices affect them.
Tax and legal points the application does not check
TikTok verifies your identity. It does not check whether you are set up properly for tax, and those obligations are yours.
- Self Assessment. If you are a sole trader and your gross trading income goes over the £1,000 trading allowance, you need to tell HMRC. GOV.UK explains the tax-free allowances on trading income.
- Platform reporting. Digital platforms now report certain seller income to HMRC under the reporting rules for digital platforms. Assume HMRC can see what you sell.
- VAT. At the time of writing (October 2026), you must register for VAT if taxable turnover over the last 12 months goes over £90,000, according to the GOV.UK VAT registration page. Remember that turnover across every channel counts, not just TikTok.
- Consumer law and product safety. You are the seller of record. If you import products yourself, you may also carry the legal responsibilities of an importer.
If you also sell through your own website, UK website legal requirements for small businesses covers the website side. The tax side for sellers without their own stock is covered in dropshipping VAT and legal rules in the UK.
Before you apply: a short checklist
- Seller type decided, matching your real legal entity
- ID valid and in date
- Proof of address recent and matching
- Bank account name matches exactly
- Company details copied from Companies House, not typed from memory
- VAT number to hand if you have one
- Product list checked against the restricted products policy
- Warehouse and return addresses decided
- Someone responsible for checking Seller Centre daily once live
Once you are approved, the next decision is pricing, and that starts with knowing exactly what TikTok takes. TikTok Shop fees UK explained breaks that down.
If you would rather hand the setup over, the TikTok Shop setup service handles registration, verification and compliance checks before the catalogue goes live.
