How to Sell on Etsy UK

What you are allowed to sell, what it costs, what the law expects of a UK shop, and how to build listings Etsy search can actually find.

Steps to open and grow an Etsy shop in the UK

Short answer

To sell on Etsy UK, check your products meet Etsy's Creativity Standards (made, designed, handpicked or sourced by you), open a shop with a UK bank account and ID, and pay the one-time setup fee if shown. Then build listings around buyer search terms, price in Etsy's fees and postage, follow UK consumer law, and answer messages and dispatch on time.

Selling on Etsy UK means opening a shop, listing items that meet Etsy's rules on what can be sold, and running it in a way that keeps both Etsy search and UK consumer law happy. Setting up takes an afternoon. The work that decides whether anyone finds the shop — research, listings, photography and service — takes longer, and it is where most new shops fall short.

This is the hub for Etsy on this site. Fees and rules are as they stand at the time of writing (October 2026), with links to Etsy's official pages. If you also sell on eBay or Amazon, the eBay listing optimisation guide explains how a listing-centric marketplace with a different search system rewards different habits.

What can you sell on Etsy?

Etsy is not a general marketplace. Its Creativity Standards allow four kinds of item:

CategoryWhat it meansExamples
Made by a sellerPhysical items you make by hand or with toolsJewellery, ceramics, candles, clothing
Designed by a sellerYour original designs, produced by a partner or sold as downloadsPrint-on-demand prints, digital planners, patterns
Handpicked by a sellerVintage (20+ years old), items from nature, curated collectionsVintage clothing, mid-century homeware
Sourced by a sellerSupplies that help buyers createCraft supplies, beads, party supplies

Reselling mass-produced goods is not allowed, and calling a new item "vintage" because it looks old breaches the rules. If you use a production partner — a print-on-demand company, a manufacturer — Etsy expects you to disclose it on the listing.

If your product does not fit those categories, Etsy is the wrong channel; eBay vs Amazon covers the general marketplaces.

Setting up an Etsy shop

  1. Create an Etsy account and choose to open a shop.
  2. Set shop preferences: language, country (United Kingdom) and currency (GBP). List in the same currency as your bank account to avoid Etsy's 2.5% currency conversion fee.
  3. Choose a shop name. Short, readable, and not a trademark you do not own.
  4. Create your first listings — Etsy requires at least one before the shop opens.
  5. Set up Etsy Payments with your bank details and identity verification. Etsy may hold a reserve on new shops' funds for a period.
  6. Add billing details. Etsy may charge a one-time shop setup fee; if it applies, the amount is shown before you finish.
  7. Write shop policies: returns and exchanges, dispatch times, privacy — consistent with UK consumer law.
  8. Complete the About section with who you are and how you make things. Buyers on Etsy care about this more than on any other marketplace.

What does it cost to sell on Etsy UK?

At the time of writing, according to Etsy's Fees and Payments Policy:

FeeAmount
Listing fee$0.20 USD per listing, lasting four months or until it sells
Transaction fee6.5% of item price plus postage and gift wrap
Payment processing (UK bank account)4% + £0.20 per order
Regulatory operating fee (UK)0.48% since 22 June 2026, previously 0.32%
Offsite Ads (on attributed sales)15%, or 12% once you have passed $10,000 in sales over 12 months; capped at $100 per order
VAT on feesCharged on Etsy's seller fees for UK sellers

Etsy fees UK explained works through what that means on a real order. On a typical small item, fees before VAT and ads come to roughly 12% of the order total, and Offsite Ads can more than double that on an attributed sale. Price with that in mind from the start.

UK tax and the law for Etsy sellers

Income tax. If you make or buy items to sell for profit, HMRC treats it as trading, even if it started as a hobby. Trading income over the £1,000 trading allowance must be declared. The allowance applies to income, not profit.

Platform reporting. Etsy reports sellers to HMRC under the digital platform reporting rules unless they made fewer than 30 sales and received 2,000 euros (about £1,700) or less in the year.

VAT. Registration is required once taxable turnover passes £90,000 in 12 months. Most Etsy shops never reach it, but turnover includes postage charged, so check.

Consumer law. As a business selling at a distance, you must give buyers your business name and contact details, clear prices including postage, and information about their cancellation rights. Buyers generally have 14 days from delivery to cancel, under the rules described in online and distance selling for businesses. Goods made to the buyer's specifications or clearly personalised are exempt from that cancellation right under regulation 28 of the Consumer Contracts Regulations, but not from the duty to supply items that are as described and of satisfactory quality.

Building listings that Etsy search finds

Etsy search works in two stages: it finds listings that match the search, then ranks them. Matching uses your title, tags, category, attributes and more; ranking uses listing quality, how well the listing converts, your shop's customer service record, recency and the shopper's own behaviour. The Etsy SEO guide covers it properly. The essentials for a first listing:

  1. Research the words buyers use with Etsy's own search bar suggestions.
  2. Write a clear title that says what the item is in those words.
  3. Use all 13 tags, as multi-word phrases, each up to 20 characters.
  4. Choose the most specific category and fill every attribute — colour, material, occasion.
  5. Use your best photo first. It is what appears in search results. Etsy listing photos and descriptions covers what makes it work.
  6. Write a description that answers size, materials, care, personalisation and dispatch time.

Pricing an Etsy product

A simple method that holds up:

  1. Materials per item
  2. Your time at an hourly rate you would accept from an employer
  3. Overheads — packaging, equipment, software, a share of fixed costs
  4. Etsy fees — around 12–15% of the order total including VAT on fees, more with Offsite Ads
  5. Profit on top

Then check against similar items on Etsy. If your price is far above everything comparable, either your listing needs to show why it is worth more, or the product is not viable at that cost.

Postage for UK Etsy sellers

  • Weigh and measure every product in its packaging.
  • Use postage profiles so prices and dispatch times are consistent.
  • Buy labels through Etsy where possible, so tracking uploads automatically.
  • Consider building postage into the price on light items; buyers on Etsy compare totals.
  • Set a dispatch time you can always meet, including for made-to-order items.

Service habits that build an Etsy shop

Etsy's search looks at your shop's customer service record, and Etsy's Star Seller badge rewards it. At the time of writing, Star Seller requires, over the previous three months: replying to 95% of first messages within 24 hours; dispatching 95% of orders on time with tracking or an Etsy label; an average review rating of 4.8 or above; and at least 5 orders and $300 in sales. Details are on Etsy's Star Seller page.

Those thresholds are also simply good practice: fast replies, on-time dispatch, accurate listings.

Digital products on Etsy

Digital downloads — printables, planners, patterns, templates — are allowed under "designed by a seller", and they avoid postage and stock. They are also among the most crowded parts of Etsy. Points worth knowing:

  • Listing, transaction and processing fees apply as for physical items.
  • Buyers can download immediately, so the 14-day cancellation right works differently for digital content once download has started with the buyer's consent; set that consent out clearly.
  • Your design must be original. Reselling templates or artwork you bought a licence to use, without creating something new, breaches Etsy's rules.
  • Previews need to show exactly what the buyer receives, including file formats and sizes.

Mistakes new Etsy sellers make

  • Listing ten items and waiting. A small shop with few listings gives Etsy and shoppers little to work with. Build steadily, with each listing done properly.
  • Underpricing. Matching the cheapest comparable item rarely leaves room for fees, materials and your time, and raising prices later is harder.
  • One great product photo, then nothing. Buyers want scale, detail and the item in use.
  • Copying another shop's tags and titles. It puts you head-to-head with an established listing that already has sales history.
  • Slow replies. A buyer asking about personalisation is usually ready to buy now.
  • Vague dispatch times. "Ships when ready" does not survive contact with Christmas.

When to advertise

Etsy offers two kinds of advertising: Etsy Ads, which you choose to run and pay per click, and Offsite Ads, which Etsy runs on other sites and charges a percentage on attributed sales. Neither fixes a listing that does not convert. Etsy Ads: are they worth it? covers when they are.

Getting help with an Etsy shop

Most makers can run their own shop, and should understand how it works. Help makes sense when listings are not converting and you cannot see why, when you have a large catalogue to optimise, or when you would rather spend your time making. My Etsy management service covers shop setup, listing SEO, pricing and ongoing optimisation, and the same research approach as researching products before you commit applies before adding new lines.

Yes. Many Etsy sellers start as individuals. But if you make or buy things to sell for profit, HMRC treats that as trading, even if it began as a hobby. Trading income above the £1,000 trading allowance in a tax year must be declared, and Etsy reports sellers above the platform reporting threshold to HMRC.

As a business selling at a distance, buyers generally have 14 days from delivery to cancel. Items made to the buyer's specifications or clearly personalised are an exception. Faulty or not-as-described items must be dealt with regardless. Etsy also lets you set a returns policy, which must not undercut the buyer's legal rights.

There is no reliable timeline. New listings get a short recency benefit in search, but sustained visibility depends on how well listings convert and how the shop serves buyers. Shops with well-researched listings and good photos usually see their first sales sooner, but product demand matters more than anything you do in Shop Manager.

Yes, and many sellers do. Keep stock synced so you do not sell the same one-off item twice, and be careful with pricing: if your own site is much cheaper, buyers will notice. Etsy brings buyers who are already looking; your own site gives you control and customer relationships. Each has a job.
