Etsy Listing Photos and Descriptions That Sell

The first photo earns the click. The rest of the photos and the description earn the sale. Here is how to plan both.

Etsy listing photo shot list and description structure

Short answer

On Etsy, the first photo decides whether a shopper clicks, so make it clear and appealing at thumbnail size. Use the remaining photos (up to 20) for scale, detail, the item in use and variations, and add a short video. Write descriptions that open with a plain summary, then answer size, materials, care, personalisation and dispatch questions before buyers have to ask.

Etsy listing photos and descriptions do two different jobs. The first photo appears in search results and decides whether a shopper clicks. The other photos and the description decide whether the person who clicked goes on to buy — and on Etsy, that conversion feeds back into search ranking, so better listings get shown more.

Image specifications here are from Etsy's help pages on image requirements and best practice and listing videos, at the time of writing (October 2026). For the search side, see the Etsy SEO guide; for the overall shop, how to sell on Etsy UK.

Etsy listing photos: the essentials

SpecAt the time of writing
Photos per listingUp to 20
Recommended sizeAt least 2,000 pixels on the shortest side
VideoShort clips; Etsy recommends a finished length of 5 to 15 seconds
Alt textCan be added per photo

Larger images let shoppers zoom in, which matters for texture, stitching and small details. Fill the alt text field with a short, plain description of each photo; it helps shoppers using screen readers and gives search engines context.

The first photo

The first photo carries most of the weight because it is what shoppers see in a grid of similar items.

  • Make the item instantly recognisable at small size. Zoom out of your phone screen and look at it as a thumbnail.
  • Fill the frame, leaving enough room for Etsy's crop on different devices.
  • Use a clean background that contrasts with the item.
  • Light it evenly, ideally with soft daylight from a window.
  • Keep it consistent across your shop, so your listings look like a collection.
  • No text overlays, borders or collages on the first photo; they make it harder to see the item.

Test it: search for your own product type on the Etsy app and look at your thumbnail among the others. If you cannot spot it quickly, neither can a buyer.

A simple home photo setup

You do not need a studio. A setup that works for most small handmade items:

  1. A table next to a large window, out of direct sunlight. Overcast days give the softest light.
  2. A plain backdrop — a sheet of white or pale card curved up behind the item so there is no visible horizon line.
  3. A white reflector opposite the window — card or foam board — to lift the shadows.
  4. Your phone on a small tripod, using the main camera rather than the wide-angle lens, which distorts shape.
  5. Exposure locked on the item, so the background does not trick the phone into darkening it.
  6. The same position, light and distance for every product in a collection, so the shop looks consistent.

Turn off the room's overhead lights. Mixing warm bulbs with daylight is what produces the yellow cast common in Etsy photos.

A shot list for the other photos

Plan the remaining photos to answer the questions a buyer would ask in a shop:

  1. The item from other angles — back, side, underneath where relevant
  2. Scale — in a hand, on a person, next to a familiar object
  3. Detail — texture, clasp, stitching, glaze, finish
  4. In use or in context — worn, on a shelf, in a room
  5. Variations — every colour or size option you offer
  6. Personalisation examples — what different names or text look like
  7. Packaging — especially for gifts
  8. What is included — if it is a set

For vintage items, add photos of any wear, marks or repairs. A flaw shown honestly is a detail; a flaw discovered on delivery is a return and a poor review.

Listing video

Video plays in the listing and can show what photos cannot: how fabric moves, how a ring catches the light, how a box opens. Keep it short and simple — the item, turning or in use, steady and well lit. Etsy's listing videos play without sound, so do not rely on narration.

Etsy descriptions that sell

Structure matters more than length.

  1. Open with one or two plain sentences saying what the item is and what makes it worth having. This also shows when Etsy pages appear in Google results.
  2. Key details as a list: dimensions, materials, weight, colours.
  3. Options and personalisation: what can be changed, how to provide details, character limits.
  4. Care instructions.
  5. Dispatch and delivery: made-to-order time, postage options.
  6. Anything a buyer must know: allergens, age suitability, safety notes.

Describing variations and options

If a listing has several sizes, colours or finishes, the description has to make each one clear. State what changes between options — dimensions, price, dispatch time — in a short list, and match the wording exactly to the variation names buyers select. Photograph every option, and say which photo shows which. Ambiguity here is one of the most common causes of "wrong item" messages on personalised and made-to-order listings.

Writing in a way that reads well on a phone

Most Etsy shoppers browse on the app. So:

  • Short paragraphs, one idea each
  • Lists for specifications
  • The important information first, before any story about how you make it
  • No walls of capital letters or repeated keywords
  • Sizes in both metric and imperial if you post to the US

Answering questions before they are asked

The best source for a description is the questions buyers already send you. Every pre-sale message is a gap in the listing. Keep a note of them and add the answers to the description, and to similar listings. Improving eCommerce product descriptions covers finding those questions in messages, reviews and returns.

A worked example (hypothetical listing)

A personalised wooden chopping board.

Weak description: "Beautiful handmade board, perfect gift! Message me with any questions."

Stronger description:

"A solid oak chopping board engraved with your family name and the year — a practical gift for weddings, anniversaries and new homes.

  • Size: 40 × 25 × 2cm
  • Material: FSC-certified oak, finished with food-safe oil
  • Engraving: up to 20 characters on the top line, a four-digit year below
  • Care: hand wash only; re-oil occasionally

Add your name and year in the personalisation box. Each board is made to order and dispatched within 5 working days. As this item is personalised, it cannot be returned unless it arrives damaged or incorrect."

The second version answers size, material, personalisation limits, care, timescale and returns. Each of those would otherwise have been a message, or a lost sale.

Common photo and description mistakes

  • Dark or yellow-tinted photos from indoor lighting
  • Busy props that compete with the item
  • Only one or two photos
  • No scale reference, which leads to "smaller than expected" reviews
  • Descriptions copied between different products with the details left unchanged
  • Story first, facts last, so the buyer scrolls past the information they needed

Photos beyond Etsy

If you also run your own website, your Etsy photos are a ready-made library, but compress them first — large images slow pages down. How images affect website speed and SEO explains why. The same listing discipline also applies on other marketplaces; the eBay listing optimisation guide shows how photos and descriptions feed visibility on eBay.

Not usually. A modern phone, good daylight, a plain background and a cheap reflector produce excellent listing photos for most handmade items. What matters more is consistency and a planned shot list. A professional shoot is worth it for lifestyle images across a range, but rarely for every listing.

Etsy does not require one, unlike Amazon's main image. A clean, uncluttered background helps the item stand out in search, but a styled setting that suits the product and the shop's look can work well too. The test is whether the item is instantly recognisable at thumbnail size among dozens of others.

Long enough to answer the questions buyers ask, and no longer. For a simple item that might be 100 words; for a personalised or made-to-order item with options, considerably more. Use short paragraphs and lists so it reads easily on a phone, and put the most important details first.
