Etsy SEO: How Etsy Search Ranks Listings
Etsy search is two steps: does your listing match, and is it likely to sell. Most Etsy SEO advice only covers the first.

Short answer
Etsy SEO has two parts. Query matching decides whether your listing appears for a search, using title, tags, category, attributes, description and more. Ranking decides where it appears, using listing quality and conversion, your shop's customer service, recency and shopper behaviour. Use all 13 tags, clear buyer-language titles and every relevant attribute — then improve conversion, which drives ranking.
Etsy SEO is the work of getting your listings shown in Etsy search. Etsy search runs in two stages: query matching, which decides whether your listing is eligible for a search at all, and ranking, which decides where among the matches it appears. Titles, tags and attributes get you matched. Listing quality, conversion and your shop's service record decide your position.
Most Etsy SEO advice stops at the first stage. This guide covers both, based on Etsy's own explanation of how Etsy search works and its search ranking disclosures, at the time of writing (October 2026). For the basics of opening a shop, start with how to sell on Etsy UK.
Stage one: query matching
When someone searches, Etsy first gathers the listings that match. Etsy describes this as a holistic view of the listing, including the title, tags, category, attributes, description, first photo and reviews.
What helps a listing match:
- All 13 tags used, with variety
- Every relevant attribute filled — colour, material, occasion, style, recipient
- The most specific category that fits
- A title that states plainly what the item is
Stage two: ranking
Once Etsy has the matching listings, it orders them so shoppers see the items most likely to be bought first. The factors Etsy describes:
| Factor | What it means | What you control |
|---|---|---|
| Listing quality and engagement | How often people who see or visit the listing go on to favourite or buy it | Photos, price, title clarity, description |
| Customer and market experience | Your shop's review rating, message response, case rate over recent months | Service, accurate listings, dispatch |
| Recency | How recently the item was listed or renewed | Listing new items; renewing selectively |
| Context-specific ranking | Etsy's model of what this particular shopper is likely to buy | Indirectly, through relevance |
| Shipping and location factors | Postage price and where the buyer is | Postage pricing and profiles |
The important point: conversion feeds ranking. A listing that gets views but no sales tells Etsy shoppers are not interested, and it slips. That is why photography and pricing are SEO work on Etsy, not separate from it.
Etsy keyword research
You do not need a paid tool to start. You need the words buyers actually use.
- Etsy's search bar suggestions. Type the start of a product description and note the suggestions. These are real searches.
- Your own shop stats. Shop Manager shows the search terms that brought visitors to your listings. Terms that bring visits are worth keeping; terms you target that never appear may not be searched.
- Related searches and filters on Etsy results pages show how buyers narrow down.
- Think in buyer language, not maker language. You might call it "wheel-thrown stoneware"; a buyer searches "handmade ceramic mug".
- Cover the different ways people shop: what it is, who it is for, the occasion, the style, the material.
Keyword research for small businesses covers the same thinking for Google, and much of it carries over.
Writing Etsy titles
Titles can be up to 140 characters. Etsy's own guidance has moved towards clear, readable titles rather than long strings of keywords, and that matches how the title is displayed: shoppers see the start of it in search results and judge whether it is what they want.
A structure that works:
What it is + key detail + one distinguishing feature
- Good: "Personalised Birth Flower Necklace, Sterling Silver, Gift for Mum"
- Weak: "Necklace Necklace for Women Gift Mum Gift Birthday Gift Flower Necklace Silver Jewellery Personalised"
The first is readable and still matches the main searches. The tags carry the rest.
Using all 13 Etsy tags
Each listing gets 13 tags, each up to 20 characters.
- Use multi-word phrases. "birth flower gift" matches more meaningful searches than "flower".
- Use all 13. An unused tag is a search you have chosen not to appear in.
- Vary them. Synonyms, occasions, recipients, styles, materials.
- Do not waste tags on attributes you have already set. Etsy treats attributes such as colour as matching signals, so a tag that simply repeats one adds little.
- Spell as UK buyers do, and consider US spellings too if you post internationally — "personalised" and "personalized" are different searches.
- Avoid trademarked terms you have no right to use. Etsy removes listings for intellectual property infringement.
Attributes and categories
Attributes are the structured options Etsy offers per category: colour, material, occasion, holiday, style, room, and so on. They power filters, and they act like extra tags.
- Choose the most specific category for the item.
- Fill every attribute that genuinely applies.
- Check attributes when Etsy adds new ones to your category.
This is the Etsy equivalent of eBay item specifics, and it is just as neglected. The eBay item specifics guide explains the same principle on eBay, and the eBay listing optimisation guide shows how a different marketplace weighs structured data against titles.
Descriptions and Etsy SEO
Etsy includes descriptions in its view of the listing, and Google uses the start of the description when Etsy pages appear in Google results. So:
- Open with one or two clear sentences describing the item in plain language.
- Then answer the practical questions: size, materials, care, personalisation, dispatch time.
- Do not stuff keywords into the description. It reads badly and does not help conversion.
Etsy listing photos and descriptions covers writing descriptions that sell.
The customer service part of Etsy SEO
Etsy's ranking takes account of your shop's recent review rating, message response rate and case rate. In practice:
- Reply to messages within 24 hours
- Dispatch on time, with tracking where possible
- Describe items accurately, so reviews reflect what buyers expected
- Resolve problems before they become cases
Reading your Etsy search data
Shop Manager's stats show visits, sources and the search terms bringing traffic. A simple diagnostic per listing:
| Pattern | Likely problem | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Few impressions or visits | Not matching searches | Tags, title, attributes, category |
| Visits but few favourites or sales | Not converting | First photo, price, description, postage |
| Favourites but few sales | Hesitation at the last step | Price, postage cost, dispatch time, reviews |
| Sales falling over time | Competition or seasonality | Refresh photos, check competitors, review pricing |
Change one thing at a time on your main listings so you can tell what made the difference.
A worked example: rewriting one listing (hypothetical)
A seller lists a hand-poured soy candle in an amber jar.
Before:
- Title: "Autumn Dreams"
- Tags: candle, soy, autumn, gift, handmade, amber, jar
- Attributes: none set
- Category: Home & Living
The title tells a searcher nothing. Seven tags are unused, the ones used are single words, and with no attributes or specific category, the listing is missing from filtered searches.
After:
- Title: "Autumn Soy Candle in Amber Jar, Spiced Apple Scent, Hand Poured Gift"
- Tags: autumn soy candle, spiced apple candle, amber jar candle, hand poured candle, cosy home gift, housewarming gift, gift for her, autumn home decor, vegan candle, fall candle gift, apple cinnamon scent, eco friendly candle, teacher gift
- Category: the specific candles category
- Attributes: scent, colour, occasion and material filled
Nothing about the product changed, but the listing now matches many more of the searches a buyer of this candle might make, in both UK and US phrasing. Whether it ranks then depends on the second stage — photos, price and whether people who click go on to buy.
Seasonal searches
Etsy search is heavily seasonal. Christmas, Mother's Day, Valentine's Day, weddings and back-to-school all bring searches that barely exist the rest of the year. Two practical points:
- Update tags and titles a few weeks before a season, not on the day. Listings need time to collect views and sales.
- Do not leave seasonal tags on all year if they crowd out better year-round phrases. Swap them in and out on your main listings.
Note that UK and US seasons differ: Mother's Day in the UK falls in March, in the US in May.
Common Etsy SEO mistakes
- Tags that are single words, which match vague searches
- Unused tags and blank attributes
- Titles written for an algorithm, not a person
- Renewing listings constantly instead of fixing conversion
- Copying a competitor's tags exactly, which puts you in direct competition with an established listing
- Ignoring postage price, which affects both ranking and conversion
A short Etsy SEO checklist per listing
- Title says what the item is, in buyer words, readable at a glance
- All 13 tags used, as varied multi-word phrases
- Most specific category chosen
- Every relevant attribute filled
- First photo clear and appealing at thumbnail size
- Description opens with a plain summary, then the practical details
- Postage priced sensibly and dispatch time realistic
- Checked in shop stats a month later for the searches it actually attracts
Where Etsy SEO fits with advertising
Etsy Ads put your listings into paid placements, but ad placement still depends on relevance and quality, and a listing that does not convert organically will not convert in an ad. Get the listing right first; Etsy Ads: are they worth it? covers the rest.
Listing SEO tuned to how Etsy actually ranks — tags, titles, attributes and the conversion side — is the core of my Etsy management service. Nobody can promise a position in Etsy search, but a well-matched, well-converting listing gives Etsy every reason to show it.
