Etsy Ads: Are They Worth It?
Etsy Ads can work, but only on listings that already convert, with a budget set from margin rather than hope.

Short answer
Etsy Ads can be worth it for listings that already sell organically and have enough margin to absorb paid clicks. They are cost-per-click, with a daily budget you set. Offsite Ads are different: a percentage of attributed sales, compulsory above $10,000 in yearly sales. Judge both by profit per sale after ad costs, not by the number of views they bring.
Etsy Ads are worth it when they are used on listings that already sell, with a budget that your margin can afford — and not otherwise. They are cost-per-click ads inside Etsy, and like any pay-per-click advertising they amplify a listing's conversion rate rather than creating one.
There are two separate Etsy advertising programmes, and sellers often confuse them. Both are described here as they stand at the time of writing (October 2026), from Etsy's help pages on setting up Etsy Ads and Offsite Ads.
Etsy Ads vs Offsite Ads
| Etsy Ads | Offsite Ads | |
|---|---|---|
| Where ads appear | On Etsy — search results and other Etsy pages | Off Etsy — Google, social platforms and other sites |
| How you pay | Per click, through an auction | A percentage of attributed sales |
| Rate | Varies by listing and competition | 15%, or 12% once you pass $10,000 in 12-month sales |
| Cap | Your daily budget | $100 per order |
| Optional? | Yes | Only while under $10,000 in yearly sales |
How Etsy Ads charge
Etsy Ads use a sealed-bid, second-price auction. You set a daily budget; Etsy decides bids and placements within it. You pay only when a shopper clicks, and the cost per click varies by listing, placement and competition. Etsy notes that low-quality listings can cost more per click.
At the time of writing, Etsy states a minimum daily budget of $1 USD (charged in your local currency), with all sellers starting on a maximum daily budget of $25 that Etsy recalculates weekly from your last seven days of spend. You will not spend more than your daily budget, and you can change it whenever you like.
Your control is mainly at the budget and listing level: you choose which listings to advertise and how much to spend per day, while Etsy chooses the searches and placements based on your titles, tags and attributes. That is why Etsy SEO still matters for paid placements, and why the listing basics in how to sell on Etsy UK come before any ad budget.
How Offsite Ads charge
Offsite Ads are Etsy's own advertising of your listings on other sites. If a shopper clicks one and buys from your shop within 30 days, you pay the Offsite Ads fee on that order — 15% for shops under $10,000 in sales over the past 365 days, 12% once you have passed it, never more than $100 per order. Shops under the threshold can opt out in their settings; above it, participation is compulsory.
Etsy fees UK explained shows the effect on a real order: on a £28.50 sale, an Offsite Ads fee with VAT added is about £5.13 — more than all the standard fees combined.
Are Etsy Ads worth it? Work it out from margin
- Work out profit per sale after Etsy's fees, materials, packaging and postage. Say £8 on a £30 order.
- Find your conversion rate from Shop Manager stats for that listing: sales divided by visits. Say 2%.
- Work out the most you can pay per sale while still profiting: anything under £8. Decide how much of that you are prepared to give up — say £4.
- Convert that to a cost per click: £4 × 2% = 8p. If clicks cost more than about 8p on average, the ads lose you money on this listing.
- Check Etsy's advertising stats after a couple of weeks: spend, clicks, orders and revenue attributed to ads.
Etsy reports return on ad spend (revenue divided by spend). A ROAS of 4 sounds good, but if your margin is 25%, it only breaks even — you spent £1 to make £4 of revenue and £1 of profit. Always convert ROAS into profit.
When Etsy Ads tend to work
- Listings with proven organic sales, where more exposure means more sales at a known rate
- Higher-priced items where one sale covers a lot of clicks
- Seasonal peaks, when buyers are actively looking and conversion rates rise
- New listings in an established shop, to gather early data quickly
When to switch them off
- Listings with no organic sales, where the problem is conversion, not visibility
- Thin-margin items, where a few clicks wipe out the profit
- When stock is low or dispatch times are stretched
- When you cannot measure the result because too many things changed at once
A simple Etsy Ads test
- Choose three to five listings with steady organic sales and healthy margins.
- Turn ads off on everything else.
- Set a small daily budget you are comfortable losing in full.
- Write down a review date two to four weeks away, and a maximum ad cost per sale.
- Do not change titles, prices or photos on those listings during the test.
- On the review date, compare ad spend with ad-attributed orders and the profit on them.
- Keep the listings that made money, drop the rest, and only then consider adding more.
Offsite Ads: keep them on or opt out?
If you are under the $10,000 threshold, it is a genuine choice. Keep them on if your margins can absorb 15% plus VAT on attributed orders and the extra sales are ones you would not otherwise get. Opt out if margins are thin, or if you see many attributed orders from buyers who already knew your shop. Once you pass $10,000, the choice goes, so price your products with 12% on a share of orders in mind.
Compared with eBay advertising
eBay's general Promoted Listings strategy charges only when a promoted item sells, which is closer to Offsite Ads than to Etsy Ads. eBay Promoted Listings explains how it works, and the eBay listing optimisation guide covers how eBay ranks listings organically.
